Fluorescerend versus reflecterend: het is niet hetzelfde!
Hoewel de meeste producten een combinatie zijn van fluorescerende en reflecterende materialen, is er wel degelijk een groot verschil tussen beide.
Reflecterende strips zorgen ervoor dat u 's nachts zichtbaar bent na de weerkaatsing van licht afkomstig van andere weggebruikers.
Bij gebruik van uitsluitend fluorescerende materialen zonder reflecterende elementen is uw zichtbaarheid 's nachts eerder beperkt.
De afstand waarop iemand met fluorescerende kleding wordt waargenomen door een automobilist, is kleiner dan de remweg die een auto nodig heeft bij een snelheid van 70 km/uur. Met andere woorden, reflecterende elementen zijn onmisbaar in het donker.
Fluorescerende kleuren zorgen er anderzijds voor dat je overdag opvalt in het verkeer doordat ze een contrast vormen met de omgeving. De meeste ongevallen met kwetsbare verkeersdeelnemers gebeuren niet voor zonsopgang of na zonsondergang, maar overdag. Juist daarom is het enorm belangrijk om ook bij daglicht opvallende, fluorescerende kleding en accessoires te dragen.
Het is niet voldoende om reflecterende en/of fluorescerende elementen aan de voor- en achterzijde aan te brengen. Het wordt ten zeerste aanbevolen om te zorgen voor 360° zicht met voldoende aandacht voor de zijkanten. Dan benaderen automobilisten elkaar in de meeste verkeerssituaties niet frontaal.
